About the departmentThe Department of English of Hijli College has started its journey towards broadening the mental horizon of its students from the very inception of the college in 1995. Initially some dedicated visiting faculty taught there, including ex-faculty of Raja N.L. Khan Women’s College and I.I.T., Kharagpur. A full-time teacher joined the department in 1996. Since then, he has shouldered the responsibility of the multifarious activities of the department with the help of some part-time teachers. He was joined by another full-time teacher in 2007. Till now, the college has two sanctioned full-time teacher posts which are filled by the two afore-said teachers. They were assisted now by some dedicated guest teachers who do not consider themselves as guests of the department but part and parcel of it. In 1995, the department of English taught English as a General subject to Pass Course students. The students of Office Management and Secretarial Practice (Vocational Course in OMSP) also had the subject. With the passing of time, the Vocational course has been disbanded. English is still taught as a General subject to the General course students (Erstwhile Pass Course). English as a honours subject was introduced from 2003-04 session. English as a compulsory subject was taught to all students of the students of the college. In addition, now the students of BCA (Bachelor in Computer Application) had a subject entitled Communicative skill and Language Lab. But, as in other colleges, the Language Lab. in Hijli College is functioning only in a very moderate form. The poor infrastructural aspect the college could not provide class room and adequate no. of computers to the department. The students of the department have fared well in the academic sphere as well as in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The teachers of the department are very sincere in attending their various forms of workload. The head of the department acts like a true team leader. The department organizes seminar usually once in a year with the resource persons from different Universities. The students also present their paper there. The department also publishes a journal usually once in a year. The journal has got ISBN recognition. Different programmes are arranged by the students and the teachers such as Freshers’ Welcome, Farewell to the final year students and Sharadiya before the Puja Vacation. To introduce the students to the broader scenario, the department conducts tour usually once in a year. Away from the routine activities of teaching-learning, the students and teachers find a scope there to get together in an informal atmosphere. |
